A Shopify store has three kinds of cost: the Shopify plan fee, payment processing fees, and the build or design fee. Shopify charges the first two directly; only the third goes to an agency or designer.
1. Shopify plan fees
Shopify's Hong Kong sign-up page (seen on 7 October 2026) shows three main plans — Basic, Grow and Advanced — with a $1-a-month trial for the first three months. Always check the current prices on Shopify's Hong Kong pricing page. Basic is enough for most small shops.
2. Payment fees
The same page lists card rates of 3.3% + HK$2.35 on Basic, 3.2% + HK$2.35 on Grow and 3.1% + HK$2.35 on Advanced. The plans differ by only 0.1%: even at HK$100,000 a month in sales, Grow saves about HK$100 in card fees, which may not cover its higher plan fee.
3. Build and design costs
Build prices in Hong Kong vary widely: one local firm quotes custom stores from HK$6,000, while mid-size agencies typically charge HK$15,000–50,000 or more (Ideastime, July 2026). For migrations, freelancers abroad charge about US$2,000–7,500 and specialist agencies US$10,000–50,000 (Presta, September 2026).
| Item | Who charges | Guide |

| Card fees | Shopify | 3.1%–3.3% + HK$2.35 |
| Paid theme (if needed) | Theme developer | About US$180–500 one-off |
| Build / design | Agency or designer | HK$6,000 to 50,000+ |
Five questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the store account be in your name?
- Are payments, shipping and Chinese/English set up?
- Will a migration include 301 redirects to keep your Google rankings?
- Are GA4 and Meta conversion tracking included?
- How are changes and training charged after launch?
